ULMA Economic Olympiad 2024
Report: 1st International Economic Olympiad (ULMA)
On December 6th, 2024, Ulm University hosted the 1st International Economic Olympiad: Ultimate League for Mastery in Applied Economics (ULMA). As the first-ever edition, we were understandably tense about the event's outcome, but we are thrilled to report that it was a resounding success.
Participation Overview
The Olympiad brought together 84 participants from 25 countries, representing 31 universities across the globe. Participants were distributed across academic levels as follows:
- 50 Bachelor’s students
- 33 Master’s students
- 1 PhD student

The Olympiad featured 35 female participants and 49 male participants.
Highlights and Top Performances
The Olympiad tested participants across a range of topics in Economics, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and finance. The competition culminated in outstanding performances from participants across the world, with the following students achieving prizes:
Prize Winners
- Xingyu Chen: University of Melbourne (Australia) – Bachelor Online
- Top Scorer with an impressive 119 points.
Received a Prize as Best Bachelor Student Online for exceptional performance.
- Holly Johnson: University of Cape Town (South Africa) – Master Online
Scored 115 points, securing a Prize as Best Master Student Online.
- Tiburce Pégatoquet: University of Geneva (Switzerland) – Bachelor In Presence
Scored 104 points and received a Prize as Best Bachelor Student for on-campus participation.
- Christof Ganzhorn: Ulm University (Germany) – PhD In Presence
Scored 102 points, securing a Prize as the highest-scoring doctoral participant.
- Gabriel Gaupp: Ulm University (Germany) – Master In Presence
- Scored 98 points and received a Prize as Best Master Student for on-campus participation.
Reflections and Future Plans
As the first Olympiad, we were inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants. We are particularly proud of the international diversity, as students from five continents came together to showcase their passion for Economics.
A survey was conducted to gather feedback from participants to improve future editions. We aim to make this event an annual tradition, growing its reach and impact every year.
