Real-time functional MR-Imaging and non-invasive human brain interfaces

Real time fMRI (rfMRI) allows the online detection of neuronal activation. Based on the BOLD effect rfMRI provides a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and an excellent spatial resolution. Ultra-High-Field scanners (7 Tesla) increase even more the SNR thereby providing more potential for applications with higher spatial and temporal resolution. We implemented a real time fMRI framework on a 3 Tesla and a 7 Tesla scanner that used online analysis of the hemodynamic response function to control a virtual reality environment as well as to serve for neurofeedback paradigms. We will present first results, advantages and restrictions of the techniques as well as future developments.
