Julia Kemmler and her colleagues from the Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics (Prof. A. Ignatius) and the Section of Pathophysiology and Development, Department of Anesthesia (Prof. P. Radermacher) were awarded the „Wilhelm-Roux Preis 2013". The prize sponsored by B.Braun, Aesculap, amounted to 5,000 Euros and was awarded for the presentation entitled "An intermitted therapy with normobaric oxygen improves the compromised fracture healing after a blunt chest trauma in mice" at the Congress of the German Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeryin Berlin.
The award honours the best project in the field of basic research. Julia Kemmler and her team demonstrated that fracture healing was impaired by the posttraumatic systemic inflammatory response induced by an additional blunt chest trauma. The systemic inflammatory response and its deleterious effect on bone healing could be attenuated by a treatment with oxygen in the early posttraumatic phase demonstrating the strong immune modulating properties of oxygen in posttraumatic conditions. The results might have implications for the treatment of fractures in patients with multiple trauma. The work was performed within the DFG funded Clinical Research Unit KFO200.
