"Benefits and effects in Medicine"
Spring Academy 2025 at Ulm University

Ulm University

This time, the Spring Academy at Ulm University is focussing on benefits and effects in Medicine. The academy week of the Centre for General Continuing Academic Education (ZAWiW) from 24 to 27 March (ZaWiW - Centre for General Scientific Education) from 24 to 27 March will showcase modern approaches from digitalisation to personalised Medicine and what these developments mean for medical care. Registration for the Spring Academy is open to all until 28 February.

What does benefit mean in Medicine? When is a Medicine treatment successful? How can scientific findings improve patient care? This year's Spring Academy will focus on questions relating to the meaning and benefits of Medicine and the promotion of health literacy. Working groups, the popular Wednesday events, a knowledge market and a reading with piano music round off the four-day programme.

The week will be opened on Monday, 24 March (9:30 a.m., H 4/5) by Professor Michael Kühl, Vice President Outreach of the University. Katrin Albsteiger, Mayor of Neu-Ulm, will give a welcoming address and ZaWiW - Centre for General Scientific Education (Zentrum für Allgemeine Wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung) Managing Director Dr Markus Marquard will present the programme for the coming days. Professor Thomas Wirth, Dean of the Medical Faculty, will then give an overview of the latest medical developments in the opening lecture entitled "Medicine - Quo vadis?". The other morning lectures will focus on health policy, the acquisition of health literacy and the genetic risk of tumour diseases (10:00 a.m., H 4/5).

At lunchtime, exercise programmes and guided tours of the Botanical Garden and the TTU training hospital will provide a balance to the lectures, before participants can explore various topics in greater depth in the 18 working groups in the afternoon. The spectrum ranges from questions on artificial intelligence to regional studies of Ukraine and sexuality through the ages. The Wednesday activities include visits to the Hochschule für Gestaltung and the Museum of Bread and Art.
At a cultural event on Monday, 24 March at 16:30 (H 4/5), authors Ellen Händler and Uta Mitsching-Viertel will present the different realities of life for men and women in East Germany. The head of Ulm University's piano class, Valerij Petasch, will accompany the reading on the grand piano.
A knowledge market on Thursday afternoon, 27 March (12:00 - 14:00), in the University Forum offers insights into medical research at the University and space for exchange with young scientists at the end of the academy week.
