In the British Times Higher Education ranking “THE 150 Under 50”, Ulm University has again improved its position. In the newly published comparison of young universities founded less than 50 years ago, Ulm University is currently ranked 13th worldwide. Last year it was ranked 15th. Ulm University has also performed well in the “THE World University Ranking 2015 – 16” of the best universities globally (top 1% of all universities). Ulm has scored well and secured/reached 192nd place – even in front of universities such as Frankfurt, Mainz and Stuttgart. In the THE performance comparison of European universities, (“Best Universities in Europe 2016: top 200”) Ulm occupies a respectable 98th position.
The newly published ranking “THE 150 Under 50” includes 150 young universities from 39 countries. This year it is again headed by the Swiss École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, followed by Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Overall, European and east Asian universities dominate the list. Ten universities from Germany are represented, including the University of Constance (7th place), followed by the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) which was created from the University of Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Research Centre in 2009. This time, the title of “Best Young University in Germany” can be claimed by the University of Constance, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016.
“The excellent results in the ranking “THE 150 und 50” is proof of Ulm University’s research strength and international orientation. In 2017 we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary, and hope to be able to claim the title of 'Best Young University in Germany' for Ulm”, says Professor Michael Weber, President of the university.
All the evaluated institutions were rated according to 13 indicators. Ulm University scored particularly well in the areas of citations, international orientation and industrial resources. In the performance range of young universities, the same strict standards are applied as in the more traditional THE rankings. It is only the reputation of the institutions under 50 years old that is given less weight.
