Symbol of quality confirmed
Ulm University once again Germany’s best young uni

Ulm University

Title defended! Ulm University, established 1967, once again scores highly in 100 Under 50 Rankings of British magazine Times Higher Education (THE). Building on last year’s success, it continues to be Germany’s best university under 50 years old. The list is a ranking of the top 100 young universities in the whole world. In the international comparison, Ulm University earned a very respectable 15th place – nudging up one place compared to the previous year. “We believe our renewed success in this prestigious international ranking is testament to our efforts. We were awarded the symbol of quality as Germany’s best young university twice last year in rankings by Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds. This success demonstrates Ulm University’s research performance and targeted growth, putting us in an excellent position in international competition,” comments University President Prof Karl Joachim Ebeling. THE 100 Under 50 Rankings 2015 is headed by Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, followed closely in 2nd to 5th place by East Asian higher education institutions. The German universities of Constance, Bremen, Bochum, Bielefeld, Duisburg-Essen and Bayreuth also feature in the ranking below Ulm.All universities were assessed using 13 indicators. Ulm University scored particularly well in the citations category. This indicator was assessed by examining some six million journal articles, published over a period of five years in the “Web of Science”. Ulm University also came out on top compared to all other German universities in the categories “Industry income” and “Teaching”. The ranking applies the same stringent performance indicators as the traditional THE World University Rankings – only reputation is assessed in a different way. “So many universities in this ranking have shown they can match the ancient global elite and have proven that with the right drive, what others have developed over centuries can be achieved in a matter of decades,” says Phil Baty, Editor of THE Rankings. Incidentally, Ulm University made it to positions 201 to 225 in the comprehensive THE World University Ranking – putting it on a par with establishments such as Goethe University Frankfurt. The international QS University Ranking (Quacquarelli Symonds) Top 50 Under 50, published in autumn 2014, also places Ulm University above all other young universities in Germany. In the global comparison, it achieved 17th place – well ahead of Constance and Bremen.
