Clarivate looks at scientific publications from the past ten years and analyses the independent and largest citation index “Web of Science” for its evaluation. The more frequently an author is cited in the publications, the higher his or her citation index. The Highly Cited Researchers are among the top one per cent of the most frequently cited authors in their field in a respective year, which attests to the importance of their research.

The most frequently cited scientists in Ulm have already been represented in the report for several years - most notably Dr Dr Kelly Del Tredici, as part of the Del Tredici-Braak neuroscientist couple from the Clinical Neuroanatomy team at the Ulm University Medical Centre Department of Neurology. The so-called Braak stages are used to classify the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Leukaemia researcher Professor Hartmut Döhner is also included in the assessment. Döhner is the medical director of the University Medical Centre Department of Internal Medicine III and an expert on the most common types of leukaemia in adults. Professor Stephan Stilgenbauer, medical director of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre Ulm (CCCU) at the Ulm University Medical Centre also conducts research on tumours and types of cancers.

Botanist Professor Steven Jansen (Institute of Systematic Botany and Ecology) researches water transport in plants as well as the effects of drought stress on plants.

The two quantum physicists Professor Fedor Jelezko (head of the Institute of Quantum Optics) and the head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Professor Martin Plenio, have established a new research field combining quantum technology and biomedicine. Relying on the help of artificial nanodiamonds, they hope to improve sensors and imaging techniques such as MRI.

A total of 6,849 Highly Cited Researchers from more than 1,300 universities, research institutes and commercial organisations in 67 countries and regions were listed for 2023. The largest number of HCRs are from the US (2,669), followed by China (1,275) and Great Britain (574). Germany comes in at fourth place with 336 researchers. The analysis is based on high-level scientific publications from the last decade, which demonstrate the level of influence that the researchers have.
