Ulm University and the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd are intensifying their successful collaboration in teacher training: The new Gmünd Ulm School of Education (GUSE) sees the two universities creating a joint institution that offers prospective teachers the best prospects thanks to first-class scientific and practical education. The universities' managements signed the cooperation agreement on February 19th.
GUSE combines the outstanding subject discipline expertise of Ulm University with the excellent didactic expertise of Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education. Student teachers will also benefit from this combination through personalised support and innovative teaching concepts. The new institution turns eastern Baden-Württemberg into a top address for teacher training programmes, particularly in Mathematics, Computer Science, Science and Technology. As a central contact body for students and teachers in the Teacher Education programme, GUSE also networks educational stakeholders in the region and continuously develops teacher training with a view to future challenges.
A particular focus is on attracting more student teachers to STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). GUSE emphasises personal support and high quality, to which the tried-and-tested summer school between Ulm and Schwäbisch-Gmünd also contributes. Teacher Education staff and students from both locations meet there to prepare relevant research content and contemporary topics for the modern teaching of tomorrow. The umbrella structure of GUSE also facilitates joint applications for third-party funding, which should further reinforce teacher training.
On February 19th, University President Professor Michael Weber and Professor Kim-Patrick Sabla-Dimitrov, Rector of the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd, signed the cooperation agreement at Ulm University. "The foundation of the School of Education will help to further develop teacher training at Ulm University and meet the challenges of the future together. It is therefore very pleasing that the many years of positive cooperation can now be anchored institutionally," says Professor Olga Pollatos, Vice President for Teaching at Ulm University. "We are very pleased that we have established the joint School of Education in our anniversary year and can thus reinforce teacher training in Baden-Württemberg," adds Rector Sabla-Dimitrov. As a University of Education with a university profile, the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd is grounded in a 200-year-old tradition of teacher training.
