Proof of English language skills for English-taught degree programmes
Applicants for an English-taught degree programme must demonstrate English language skills.
The master's degree programmes in Cognitive Systems, Communication and Information Technology, Molecular Medicine and Molecular and Translational Neuroscience require language skills at level C 1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Applicants must fulfil this requirement by submitting one of the following language certificates:
- Higher education degree in a study programme with English as the sole language of instruction
- 7.0 points or more in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS, IELTS Academic (IELTS online) or IELTS Indicator); if both score and CEFR level are indicated, the higher indicated language proficiency level will be recognised.
- Certificate in C 1 Advanced English or Certificate C 2 Proficiency in English in the Cambridge exam
- 490 (listening), 455 (reading), 180 (speaking) and 180 (writing) points or more in the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
- 95 points or more in the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based (TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT home edition)
- Level III or level IV of UNIcert®
- PTE Academic, with a score of 76 or higher
- CEFR C 1 level or higher shown on the higher education entrance qualification. A level of language proficiency which is partly at CEFR C 1 or lower is not recognised.
The master's degree programmes in Biology, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Energy Science and Technology, Finance, Physics, Quantum Engineering, Sensorsytemtechnik and Wirtschaftsphysik require language skills at level B 2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Applicants must fulfil this requirement by submitting one of the following language certificates:
- Higher education degree in a study programme with English as the sole language of instruction
- 5.5 points or more in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS IELTS Academic (IELTS online) or IELTS Indicator); if both score and CEFR level are indicated, the higher indicated language proficiency level will be recognised
- First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in English Language Skills (CELS) Vantage or Business English Certificate (BEC) Vantage Cambridge exam English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (Cambridge University)
- 400 (listening), 385 (reading), 160 (speaking) and 150 (writing) points or more in the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
- 72 points or more in the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based (TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT home edition)
- Level II of UNIcert®
- PTE Academic, with a score of 59 or higher
- CEFR B 2 level or higher shown on the higher education entrance qualification. A level of language proficiency which is partly at CEFR B 2 and lower is not recognised
- Higher education entrance qualification with proof of language achievement in the last 2 years with at least 5 points each.
The proof of language proficiency required for the respective degree programme must be presented at the latest at the time of enrolment. Exception: For the Master Cognitive Systems, the required language certificate must be submitted by the time of application.
Enrolment without the required language certificate is not possible.
