Research
As a postdoctoral research fellow in the research group of Prof. Annika Herwig I focus on the role of thyroid hormones in torpor regulation in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). Therefore, in vivo biochemical, metabolic rate measurements and molecular methods are applied to further understand the brain regulative mechanisms during the energy saving mode torpor. In the future, this knowledge could be applied in surgery, life support measures or space travels.
To investigate the role of thyroid hormones in torpor regulation, I use the following methods:
in vivo:
- radio frequency based telemetry to continuously measure core body temperature
- respiratory gas analysis to measure metabolic rate via indirect calorimetry
- pharmacological manipulation of the brain.
in vitro:
- immunohistochemical examination of the brain
- gene expression analysis (quantitative PCR and in situ hybridization)
