Since my Bachelor studies at the Philipps University of Marburg, I have been fascinated by Djungarian hamsters and their remarkable ability to survive the extreme winter conditions of the Siberian steppes. Especially the research on daily torpor as an important part of the hamsters' complex winter acclimatization runs through my entire scientific work at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover and now at Ulm University.
In the research group of Prof. Herwig, I investigate the influence of the hamsters' energetic state with special respect to glucose availability on torpor expression as a potential proximate trigger, as we still do not know which stimulus or interplay of stimuli tells a hamster on a certain day to show a torpor bout. Therefore, I do not only focus on spontaneous daily torpor in winter acclimated hamsters, but also compare it to fasting-induced torpor in summer acclimated hamsters, as these two forms of torpor are just two sides of the same medal.
