Welcome to the Graduate & Professional Training Center Ulm - ProTrainU
ProTrainU is the central coordinating office to support young researchers at Ulm University in the following areas:
- general advising
- career development
- start-up funding for doctoral candidates, postdocs and early stage researchers
On our website you will find general information about pursuing a doctorate at Ulm University, an overview of possible contact persons for questions about academic careers, the courses offered by ProTrainU and other university submissions, as well as information about possible start-up funding.
If you miss anything or have recommendations which might be helpful for others as well, e.g. ideas for courses, please contact us.

NEW: Ulm University Doctoral Supervision Award
For the first time, Ulm University is presenting the Doctoral Supervision Award to recognize outstanding commitment to the supervision and support of doctoral candidates. One award of EUR 2,000 will be presented in each faculty.
Are you pursuing your doctorate at Ulm University or did you complete your doctorate less than two years ago?
Nominate professors, other supervisors or supervision teams of Ulm University who have made an exceptional contribution to the quality of doctoral supervision by 20 September 2026.

Young Researchers’ Science Day 2026
Postdoctoral researchers from all faculties of Ulm University are eligible to apply prior to submitting their habilitation thesis.
Funding for Postdoctoral researchers from all faculties of Ulm University are eligible to apply prior to submitting their habilitation thesis. As part of a Science pitch, the two best project ideas will be awarded by the ProTrainU Executive Board and will receive the following funding amounts:
1st place: EUR 50,000
2nd place: EUR 30,000
Funding period: 24 months
Would you like to submit an application but still have questions about the program or the application process?
Then we invite you to join our online information session.
During the session, you will receive a brief overview of the funding program as well as practical tips on how to apply. You will also have the opportunity to ask your questions directly.

Bringing science to life: Successful workshop on effective poster design and compelling poster presenting
How can complex research be presented clearly, creatively, and convincingly on a poster?
And how can one present this scientific work on a poster concisely and effectively in just five minutes?
Eleven early-career researchers discovered the answers to these questions (and more) during the one-and-a-half-day workshop ‘Effective Poster Design and Presentation’, which took place in early June 2026 as an in-person event at the Ulm University.
