Our institute offers statistical consulting for all scientific projects initiated by members of the Medical Faculty of Ulm University. Usually, consultations take place online (Zoom), in exceptional cases at the institute’s Medical Biometry group at Schwabstr. 13, Michelsberg.

We support in different phases of your project:

  • study design and planning,
  • sample size estimation,
  • randomisation,
  • choice of appropriate statistical methods,
  • data analysis,
  • results interpretation
  • results publication.

We recommend to use this service in a preferably early phase of your project, enabling us to identify possible problems which might affect the integrity of your analysis as early as possible.  If you are already in the evaluation phase of your project, we will also be happy to support you where you are at.

The consulting covers the areas of study curriculum, study design, data collection and interpretation of the results and is carried out by our scientific staff.

The consulting sessions take place on Wednesdays between 2 and 4 pm and last for a maximum of one hour. If you are interested in a consultation, please contact the secretariat.

Please be sure to state the title, the objective and the planned methods of your work. Without this information, we will not be able to organise a consultation. If possible, please give us two suggested dates. You will receive an appointment confirmation by e-mail.

For biometric-statistical questions, the Institute offers appropriate consulting in the Biometrics Group (Schwabstr.).

We provide advice in accordance with the recommendations for "Good Epidemiological Practice".
Notes for prospective observational studies can be found here (docx).
Notes for studies with secondary data analysis can be found here (docx).

Dear applicants,

if you plan to submit an application for an experimental animal trial (TVA) to the authorities at Tübingen, proper statistical planning of the experiments will be a crucial aspect of the application process. Biometrical aspects needs to be transparently and appropriately addressed. You can either use a form sheet (available at the homepage of TFZ Ulm) for this purpose or ask for a biometrical report at our institute. In case of the latter, you’ll be advised to contact our secretary (via email): med.biometrie(at)uni-ulm.de.

In order to be able to process such a request most efficiently, please proceed as follows:

  • Send your TVA via mail to our secretary. From here, your request will be forwarded to one of our colleagues who will draft the report. This colleague will contact you in case that relevant information is missing.
  • Your TVA should be nearly finalised, i.e. discussed with the animal welfare officer, such that the experimental setting will remain unchanged.
  • The crucial part of the biometrical report will be an estimation of the required, i.e. most optimal, sample size to be scheduled for your experiments. For this, relevant prior information is mandatory for us, otherwise no estimation can be conducted. Please provide such data (own data, publications) and point specifically to the most relevant data to be used.
