The annual career fair ("WiMa Congress") at our university once again gave our current students a great opportunity to find out about internships and jobs. 44 companies came to Ulm for this event, which also included presentations from the field and a networking reception in the evening. Many of the company representatives were alumni, making it all the easier for current students to ask questions and get valuable tips. A series of talks on topics from actuarial science, financial economics, and financial mathematics – many of them again given by former students  - provided insights into possible career paths and showed how concepts and methods that are part of the finance program are put into practice in banks, central banks, consulting firms and insurance companies.

Ulm was recently named the most livable city in Germany by the business newspaper Handelsblatt. The city ranking highlights Ulm's exceptional quality of life, making it an ideal location for students pursuing a Master in Finance at Ulm University. The city boasts an excellent infrastructure, a vibrant cultural scene and a high standard of living.

The weekend before the penultimate Monday in July is a prime example of Ulm's cultural heritage. In keeping with a century-old tradition, the mayor of the city renews his oath to serve the citizens, which is why it is called Oath Weekend (Schwörwochenende in German). Students can immerse themselves in local traditions during this festival, including the Nabada, a carnival-like festival on the Danube River in which everyone can participate. In addition, the Serenade of Lights on the Danube is a stunning visual treat, with thousands of illuminated paper lanterns creating a magical atmosphere.

July 2024

In July, a group of our Master in Finance students went to Zurich to present their projects at SCOR, one of the world's largest reinsurers, as part of the "Management of (Re)insurance companies" course. During the previous weeks, the group had worked intensively on the analysis and modeling of catastrophe risks based on real data. The presentation day at SCOR in the executive boardroom, with its stunning view of Lake Zurich, was an absolute highlight. Many thanks to SCOR for offering and supervising the course, which provided our students with very valuable practical insights into the application of theory in practice.

Three former students of the MSc Finance program returned to Ulm to give a guest lecture on insurance premium and catastrophe risk modeling. Amir Amini, Akzharkyn Lust and Daniel Orwa work as managers in the actuarial service of Deloitte, one of the world's leading auditing and financial consulting companies. All of them are now qualified actuaries according to the German Actuarial Association (DAV), having completed a large part of their training fully integrated in our study program. The presentation covered aspects of stochastic risk modeling and provided interesting insights into why actuaries and risk managers need to think beyond models. The guest lecture was part of the "Asset Liability Management" course taught by Dr. Stefan Schelling.

We are pleased to announce that Fangyuan Zhang and Yusha Chen, two former Master in Finance students, have recently been awarded their doctoral degrees. Both completed the Master in Finance as part of the double degree program with Fudan University, and both did their PhD at the Institute of Insurance Science at Ulm University. Here is what they want to share about their experience at Ulm University:

Ulm University offers a diverse range of courses covering various aspects of finance and insurance. Among these, the research seminar was my favorite. Unlike conventional textbooks, the seminar delved into cutting-edge research topics. You may look for answers from textbooks, but you will always end up with more questions after reading papers. Engaging with fresh research materials not only enriched my understanding but also triggered my curiosity to explore further.

Fangyuan Zhang

Another rewarding aspect of studying at Ulm University has been the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research that spans traditional boundaries. Exploring the intersection of economics, mathematics, and data analytics has not only expanded my academic horizons but has also equipped me with a diverse set of skills and perspectives that I can apply to real-world challenges.

June 2021

The ongoing pandemic has forced the university to have another online semester this summer. With students and professors adapting to this new way of learning, new ways of teaching have been shown to be quite successful and welcomed by the students. Nevertheless, meeting each other in the university again is something everyone is looking forward to. For the future the university aims to blend the new online formats with classroom teaching.

As the situation is slowly becoming better and more and more people getting vaccinated, we hope that students can return to the university soon. In the meantime, we stay in touch by hosting monthly online meetings aside of the lecture program. Most recently, several Master in Finance Alumni were invited to talk about their work experience after university life. In this way, interested students could gain insights into companies like Allianz, Airbus M&A or KPMG. We thank everyone for their participation.

December 2020

As the year 2020 is coming to an end and holidays are around the corner, the Institute of Finance invited all Master in Finance students to celebrate Christmas. This year was a very special and tough year for many of us. The ongoing pandemic has led to far-reaching restrictions in public life. Universities and students had to adapt to those changes, which mainly meant distance learning for most of the year. Without the possibility for interactions in the lecture halls or the university hallways, online channels had to be used to stay in touch with our students. As part of our monthly online meetings, this year’s Christmas event featured Alumni talks, a Christmas quiz, games and lively conversations among the participants. Even so we could not meet in person, everybody enjoyed the time spent together. The Master in Finance team wishes everyone pleasant holidays and a good start into the new year.

November 2020

On Friday, November 6th, the 23rd annual Wima-Congress, a job fair organized by students of our faculty, took place. For the first time since its beginnings, the congress was held entirely online. Among the many firms that participated in the event were global players such as Allianz, AXA or PWC. On the day of the event, students had the chance to get in touch with company representatives, conduct job interviews or listen to interesting talks from the fields of finance, insurance, data analytics and more.

July 2020

The first ever online semester at Ulm University is on its way. With no possibilities for on-site lectures, digital learning alternatives had to be established. Based on an already existing digital foundation, an integrated environment for online classrooms, tutorials, student assignments, virtual presentations and more was set up to help students accomplish their learning goals from their homes.

We at the University continue to believe that a vibrant campus life and classroom teaching are two of the most important components for a student’s experience and learning outcome. We therefore hope to welcome students back to the University sooner rather than later, and we are delighted that at least part of the Curriculum will most likely resume with classroom activities next semester. However, the newly available technologies will help the University to stay ahead in the digital age and give students all tools in their hands to accomplish their degree and start a successful career afterwards.

Ulm University achieves an excellent 2nd place in a worldwide university ranking (Non-Business schools) on Actuarial Science published by the University of Nebraska. The ranking is based on research contribution over the past 5 years from the Top Five Leading Actuarial and Risk Management & Insurance Journals. This result shows that Ulm University is at the forefront of research in Actuarial Science.  Here are a few words from the Head of the Institute Prof. Chen about the Institute of Actuarial Science:

"University of Ulm is one of the leading institutions for actuarial education in Germany and worldwide. The university has strong links with the insurance industry in both research and teaching. The Institute of Insurance Science is extremely active both in research and education in actuarial science. Besides the numerous reseach outputs, the institute has provided many services to the actuarial society. For instance, I serve as a co-editor of Astin Bulletin -- the Journal of the International Actuarial Association and a board member of the German Society for Insurance and Financial Mathematics (DGVFM). The main research focuses of the institute are, among others, on life and pension insurance, asset and liability management, risk management and data analytics in insurance. The detailed research interests of our team can be found at https://www.uni-ulm.de/en/mawi/institute-of-insurance-science/research/research/.

February 2020

On Friday, 14th February, Frank Bosserhoff and Mazen Ali, two former Master in Finance students, were awarded their doctoral degree from Ulm University. In his dissertation, Frank Bosserhoff worked on optimization in stochastic financial markets with underlying jump processes. Mazen Ali dedicated his research to the topic of tensor approximation and adaptivity within model order reduction. Here is what they want to share about their experiences in the Master in Finance program:

“After completing the MSc Finance program, I conducted a PhD, doing research at the intersection of Mathematical Finance and Insurance Mathematics. The variety of classes offered during the Master’s program prepared me very well for my research. On the one hand, the courses in Financial Mathematics and Stochastics provide a deep understanding of methods used for modelling financial markets. In addition, in the class Numerical Finance we learned how to implement many of these models, a side effect being the ability to quickly write Code in C++ afterwards. On the other hand, classes in economics foster students’ understanding and interpretation of the output of mathematical models. Depending on the personal preference, the MSc Finance program is in my opinion a perfect preparation for any kind of research in the areas of Mathematical Finance, Stochastics, Actuarial Science as well as Financial Economics.”

Frank Bosserhoff

"The Master of Finance program offers classes that are well suited to prepare students for a career in the financial sector, as well as classes that are more research oriented. Due to the various seminars I took during my studies, several group projects and the master‘s thesis, I was well prepared for my Ph.D..

We are happy to announce that the former Master in Finance student and also former program coordinator Maximilian Franke got awarded his doctoral degree!

After his studies, Max did his PhD at the Institute of Finance. During the four years that he was working as the coordinator of the Master in Finance program, he had a lasting impact on its continuous development.

Max's research focused on market efficiency and is divided into three papers: In his first paper, he examines whether it is possible to identify stocks that have an extremely good performance in the future. His second paper questions the common view that stock prices were too high during the dotcom bubble ending in 2000; the evidence is rather consistent with the view that the subsequent drop in prices was too large. Max's third paper discusses market efficiency on the soccer betting market.

No evidence of short- and long-term mean reversal is identified in this study.
