Mathematical Data Science

Master Mathematical Data Science

Data science applications are everywhere. For example, data science methods enable robots to navigate the rocky landscapes of Mars, they support the quest for drugs against emerging diseases, and they help companies with product and action recommendations.

Our graduates learn mathematical thinking and skills to be able to answer questions such as:

  • How do the numerical methods used to train neural networks work?
  • How can the error rate of machine learning algorithms be monitored?
  • What statistical models are suitable for automatically detecting topics in news articles?
  • What algorithm do streaming providers use to suggest movies on a customised basis?
  • How does handwriting recognition work in mail sorting?

The study programme is generally open to all students who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in a mathematical subject with good scores, and also to students with Bachelor’s degrees in computer science and physics with in-depth knowledge of mathematics.

This is not an English-taught programme, there are several modules that must be completed in German. Students who wish to participate in the programme need to proof their German language proficiency.

What is this degree programme about?

Data science is about data, analysing data, recognising patterns in data and understanding data.

All of this is based on mathematics, algorithms and mathematical models.

In the Mathematical Data Science study programme, you will learn the statistical principles and numerical methods that make this possible. You will learn to evaluate algorithms and predictions, empirically identify causal relationships and develop new methods. Apply your knowledge to real-world data. Become sensitised to the ethical consequences the algorithmization of our society potentially has.

This study programme focuses on the foundations, the fundamental principles that will still be important ten or twenty years from now.

You will be challenged to apply the fundamentals in different fields of application. This will enable our graduates to make significant contributions in numerous professional fields. Our broad range of electives allows you to tailor your Master’s programme to your individual needs.
