Ulm University is one of the three best universities in the world in the field of actuarial science and risk management, according to the most renowned international ranking list in the field. In the UNL Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ulm University once again received an outstanding rating, coming in at 3rd place in the category of non-business schools. Ulm University was ranked first in Germany.
Ulm University may not be one of the larger or more traditional universities in Germany, but it is one of the strongest in the area of research. Yet another renowned international ranking has now confirmed this. In actuarial science – a business mathematics branch of the insurance sciences – Ulm University has now made it into the top three universities in the world for the sixth time in a row in the category of non-business schools. The UNL Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance ranking list from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is one of the most reputable ranking lists in the world in this field. Only the Canadian University of Waterloo and the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium were ranked higher than Ulm University on this list.
The positioning in the ranking list is determined by the number of publications in the five most important international journals for the areas of insurance, actuarial science and risk management, calculated over the last five years (2017 – 2021).
In the German-speaking part of the world, the Ulm department was even able to make it into the top, ahead of ETH Zurich and well before the universities of Freiburg, Munich (TU) and Bonn. “Placing so well again this year is a huge success. We are thrilled”, relates Professor An Chen, head of the Institute of Insurance Science at Ulm University. “This ranking list is proof of our institute’s high research productivity and confirms the significance of Ulm University in the field of actuarial science as one of the leading research sites in the world, despite the fact that our team is relatively small in international comparison”, Chen adds proudly. Actuarial science has a long tradition at the fairly young Ulm University. The Institute of Insurance Science has a great international network and is involved in numerous international research projects and collaborations. Currently, Professor An Chen is in Sydney at the renowned University of New South Wales (1st place in the ranking of business schools) in order to get further collaborative projects started.
Ulm’s actuary programme also attracts many students from abroad
Ulm University is among the world’s top universities in terms of teaching as well. This is due, in part, to Ulm’s unique actuary programme for students of mathematics and economics programmes. Many international students come to Ulm every year for this reason, particularly in the field of finance. The outstanding quality of education and the high standards of our students are also demonstrated every year by numerous prizes for theses and doctorates.
