On Thursday November 28, we have Marina Chugunova (Max-Planck-Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich) in our ULME seminar (4:15 pm, Heho 18, 1.20) giving a talk on “Sexual Misconduct, Accused Scientists, and Their Research” (see abstract below).
Marina will be around in the afternoon, if you want to talk to her, please let Sandra Ludwig know. We also have dinner after the talk. Please let Sandra Ludwig know if you want to join us.
Abstract: Does the scientific community sanction sexual misconduct? Using a sample of scientists accused of sexual misconduct at US universities, we find that their prior work is cited less after cases become known. The effect weakens with distance in the coauthorship network, indicating that researchers learn about sexual misconduct through their peers. Among the closest peers, male authors react more strongly, suggesting that they feel a greater need to disassociate themselves from the accused. In male-dominated fields, the effects on citations appear muted. Accused scientists are more likely to leave academic research, to move to non-university institutions, and to publish less.
