Ulm University offers about 70 study programmes, including 12 Master programmes taught entirely in English. And even our German-taught programmes offer select courses in English.
Non-degree temporary students need to plan well in advance when they decide to apply for a particular university. However, finalized information on courses offered in any given semester is usually available only a few weeks before the official start of the lecture period. When planning your application, you should therefore check out our information on regularly offered courses in the different faculties and departments, as these courses are usually not subject to any major changes.
Below you will find instructions on how to research the complete listings of our courses (time table) and course descriptions (module handbook) as well as other essential information for planning the academic aspects of your mobility.
Students who spend only 1-2 semesters at Ulm University and do not earn a degree from us are referred to as temporary non-degree students.
This term includes Erasmus and exchange students, as well as free movers.

Temporary non-degree students are not restricted to choosing their courses from one single study program, instead, they can choose a combination of courses from different programs and from different faculties. However, Erasmus+ students should take the majority of courses from programs in that subject/faculty in which the Erasmus+ agreement between Ulm and their home institution is made.
Courses from career-integrated programmes or the continuing professional education programmes offered by the School of Advanced Professional Studies (SAPS) are not open to non-degree temporary students.

The course catalogues and time tables list all available courses in general. However, some of the courses might not be offered during your exchange semester / year. Therefore you should list more courses in your learning agreement / study proposal than you are planning to take. - If you don't find a course code, just leave it blank in your learning agreement.
For all temporary non-degree students, the International Office will schedule an appointment with an academic counselor shortly before the beginning of the lecture period to advise and assist with the final course selection.
Depending on your home country's university system there might be different policies for transferring ECTS credits / German grades into your degree. Please check with your academic counselor at home! We recommend a minimum course load of 20 ECTS credits per semester in your main study program at Ulm University (the regular load is 30 ECTS per semester).

Vorlesung: primarily a lecture course in which a professor gives an overall view on a certain academic field
Seminar: requires students to participate in discussions and give presentations
Proseminar: for students in their first cycle of their studies
Hauptseminar / Oberseminar: for students in their second cycle of their studies
Übung: allows students to develop specific skills and to apply what they have learnt in the lecture / seminar
Praktikum: a practical course taught in a lab, at computers, in the field etc.

Students who only want to do a thesis/project at Ulm University do not need proficiency in German, as long as they have sufficient command of English (min. B1).
Time and duration for thesis / projects can be arranged outside regular semester dates (see: individual periods).
If you plan to do a thesis/project during your mobility at Ulm University, you should find out about the ongoing research in our faculties, departments and institutes in your field of interest. Our student advisor's can give you some directions for your search. However, you should not come to Ulm with any predefined topic and expect to find a supervisor for that particular topic.
We will grant max. 5 ECTS per month for thesis / project work, if this is the only activitiy in that time. If a thesis/project is combined with other courses, you can earn max. 30 ECTS per semester in total.
Examples: If you are going to stay for one full semester (6 months) and take several courses for a total of 12 ECTS credits, your thesis can be max. 18 ECTS credits. If you are going to stay for four months and only do your project, you can earn max. 20 credits for it.
The International Office cannot assist you in finding a supervisor or thesis project.
