- What is the daily business of computer scientists and media informatics specialists and how do their professional activities look like?
- Which industries actually need graduates of these disciplines and which qualifications are indispensable for an employment?
- How do the bachelor and master programs in computer science look like at Ulm University?
In the scope of a one-week BOGY internship, six pupils from three different schools from the region of Ulm gained detailed insights into these and other issues. During their internship at the Institute of Databases and Information Systems, the pupils had been supervised by Johannes Schobel, who received support by the entire DBIS team and colleagues from the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science.
In the scope of their BOGY internship, the pupils gained practical insights into the development of mobile applications (apps), the design of graphical user interfaces, the design and creation of web sites, and the realization of an augmented reality application. Besides these practical issues, the pupils received theoretical insights into techniques for encrypting data as well as other exciting problems from Theoretical Computer Science (e.g., Travelling Salesman Problem). Additionally, the pupils joined the Beginner's Programming Lab, which assists students in doing first steps in programming. Finally, the pupils attended several project meetings and conducted interviews with staff members as well as students. Altogether, the pupils really enjoyed their internship at DBIS.
Background:
The internship is part of the career guidance (called BOGY) taking place at German high schools. BOGY is supposed to help pupils in getting insights into different occupations, studies, apprenticeships as well as their conditions of admission. Thereby, pupils can become more clear about their wishes, skills, talents, and goals regarding their professional careers.
