Martin Theobald, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Antwerp at the moment, was recently appointed as a full professor with the focus on "Data Science" at the Institute of Databases and Information Systems, Ulm University. After the retirement of Prof. Peter Dadam, Prof. Theobald will take over the important database research and teaching at the DBIS institute and, in consequence, at the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Ulm University.
Martin Theobald received a doctoral degree from Saarland University in 2006 and spent two years as a Post-Doc at the Stanford Infolab, USA. Subsequently, he worked as a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken until he received an appointment at the University of Antwerp in 2012. In Antwerp, Prof. Theobald is a member of the Advanced Database Research and Modelling research group.
For his research Prof. Dr. Theobald has always been working with huge data sets as well as corresponding database technologies. In the scope of his PhD he developed a search engine for the ranked retrieval of huge XML data sets (TopX). Afterwards he focused on the design and development of probabilistic and temporal databases in the context of several research projects. Finally, Prof. Theobald serves on the program committees and as a reviewer for numerous international journals, conferences, and workshops.
