Handbooks on Business Process Management

Ulm University

In 2009 three handbooks on different topics related to Business Process Management (BPM) are published. Each of them is edited by distinguished BPM researchers and provides an excellent overview on the state-of-the-art in a particular BPM field. To each handbook, DBIS has contributed one chapter. Below we give a short overview on the three handbooks as well as on the chapters we have contributed to them.

The Handbook on Business Process Management, edited by Jan van Brocke and Michael Rosemann (Queensland University of Technology; Australia), will be published by Springer in October 2009. It captures the contemporary body of knowledge on BPM as articulated by the world' s BPM thought leaders. To this handbook, Manfred Reichert, Alena Hallerbach and Thomas Bauer contribute a chapter on the “Configuration and Management of Process Variants”. It reports on major results we achieved in the Provop projekt.

The Handbook of Research on Business Process Modeling, edited by Jorge Cardoso (SAP Research, Germany) and Wil van der Aalst (TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands), aids managers in the transformation of their organizations into highly competitive ones through process-aware information systems. As useful resource for business leaders, field researchers, and academicians in management, this book contains a repository to the most relevant and up-to-date information on business process modeling and BPM respectively. Manfred Reichert and Peter Dadam contribute one chapter to this handbook on “Enabling Adaptive Process-aware Information Systems with ADEPT2“. This chapters gives a comprehensive overview of major research results we achieved within the ADEPT2 projekt. – ADEPT2 is the world-leading project on next generation technologies for adaptive process management.

Finally, the Handbook of Research on Complex Dynamic Process Management: Techniques for Adaptability in Turbulent Environments edited by Minhong Wang (University of Hong Kong) and Zhaohao Sun (University Of Ballarat, Australia), investigates the nature and history of dynamic processes essential for understanding the need for flexibility and adaptability as well as the requirements to improve solutions. The provided chapters cover the development of various strategies, architectures, and techniques for achieving adaptive processes in dynamic and turbulent environments. To this handbook, Manfred Reichert, Thomas Bauer and Peter Dadam contribute a chapter on ”Flexibility for Distributed Workflows”. This chapter gives an overview on the distributed variant of our ADEPT process management technology. In particular, it summarizes basic concepts for the coordination of distributed (i.e. partitioned) workflows as well as for their controlled change during during runtime.
