AlloyWizard – that is the name of a joint development of the Opens internal link in current windowInstitute of Databases and Information Systems and Opens external link in new windowWieland-Werke AG. AlloyWizard is an innovative software that enables an easy comparison of different copper alloys and that supports customers in the selection of suitable materials.

In the Rolled Products Division, the initator of the project, the idea was born to provide customers with a programme enabling them to select a suitable mechanical condition for the application from the up to 55 different copper alloys. Since all alloys can be manufactured in different tempers, it can often be very difficult to have a clear idea of the number of combinations.

The innovative user interface and the implementation have been developed at the Institute of Databases and Information Systems at the University of Ulm in cooperation with Strategic Sales and Technical Marketing of Wieland. Opens internal link in current windowProf. Manfred Reichert as well as Opens internal link in current windowJens Kolb have realised this project together with the three students Britta Meyer, Kevin Andrews and Stefan Jahn. Wieland has been in charge of formulating the major criteria for the application: On one hand, the primary aim of the project was to improve the service for customers, while, on the other, its purpose was to simplify the complex approach to a suitable alloy- and temper combination.

Philipp Fink, the project manager in charge at Wieland, is enthusiastic: "A simple operating programme allows the customer to individually specify the necessary mechanical and physical requirements for the alloy. The AlloyWizard then chooses the suitable alloys and temper options that can subsequently be compared online. Thanks to the excellent cooperation with the Institute of Databases and Information Systems, we have been able to smoothly implement the high requirements put on the programme and to set new standards for the selection of alloys."
