Explanation of the DDC functional groups
General information
The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is a classification system for cataloguing the content of documents and other objects. It works with subject groups, e.g. "DDC 000 / Computer science, information & general works". The DDC subject groups are used, for example, by the German National Library to index its catalogued holdings.
An explanation of the subject groups can be found on the pages of the German National Library. The DDC classification works with different levels, so that the categories become finer and finer. The DNB's DDC overview of the 100 classes of the second level of the DDC is the most informative for beginners.
