Interlibrary loan is a document delivery service that can be divided into two main variants:
Passive (receiving) interlibrary loan offers members and institutions of Ulm University as well as other authorized persons the possibility to order literature that is not available in the local stock of the kiz for delivery from the stock of another library.
In return, the active (lending) interlibrary loan service delivers literature from the kiz collection to other libraries, either in the form of a loan of the original medium or as a scan or copy for retention. The external library passes on the literature supplied to its own users.

Passive (taking) interlibrary loan
- Placing orders via the library catalogue
- Delivery of monographs and articles from Germany and abroad
- Largely automated processing for the fastest possible order fulfilment
- Post-processing of non-automated orders
- Orders from abroad are processed individually in co-operation with the bibliographic service.
- Delivery either in physical form as an original medium or as a PDF file for article orders. Commercial users receive a paper copy for article orders.
- Requesting a loan period extension via a web form
Active (lending) interlibrary loan
- Placing orders via the interlibrary loan server or, in exceptional cases, by e-mail or post (red loan slip).
- Delivery of monographs and articles from the local stock to libraries in Germany and abroad
- Largely automated processing for the fastest possible order fulfilment
- Delivery as an electronic copy or as a paper copy to the partner library
User groups
Passive interlibrary loan: All persons and institutions that are authorised to use kiz services in accordance with the user regulations.
Active interlibrary loan: Academic and public libraries that fulfil the requirements of the German Interlibrary Loan Regulations (LVO).
Application modalities
The service can be used without a separate application.
A valid library account, which is included in the kiz account, is required for passive interlibrary loan. External customers require a kiz service card.
Orders are usually placed via the library catalogue. In exceptional cases, orders can also be placed in writing, verbally, electronically (by e-mail) or by telephone.
Active interlibrary loan can be used by national and international institutions in accordance with the rules of the interlibrary loan regulations.
Fee / charge
The service is subject to a fee. Users are charged fees for passive interlibrary loans in accordance with the Schedule of Fees and Charges. For active interlibrary loans, fees are charged via the BSZ in accordance with the interlibrary loan regulations. Fees for interlibrary loans abroad are customised and are mainly settled with IFLA vouchers.
