Autonomous driving on motorways is very close to series production. Research at Ulm University focuses on the urban segment, where significantly more complex situations must be dealt with. The focus ist on hardware, software, and the connectivity to the infrastructure. Research into Autonomous driving comprises not only finding solutions to technical problems, but also the broad field of human-machine interaction.

The first steps in basic electrochemical research at Ulm University were taken over 30 years ago. At the same time research on battery and fuel technologies at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW) started. Today, more than 400 scientists work on various aspects and challenges of electrochemical energy storage and conversion at the Ulm campus. The range and scale of these activities make the Ulm Campus unique in Germany and throughout Europe, and puts it on competitive footing with similar efforts in the U.S. and Asia. The various research projects cover the entire value chain from basic electrochemical research at Ulm University to battery research at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) and the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm and Karlsruhe CELEST, the POLiS Cluster of Excellence, to industry-oriented research and development including production technologies for fuel cells and batteries at the ZSW.

Quantum research is one of the key technologies for the 21st century. Ulm University is a pioneer in quantum research and, in collaboration with its partners from the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, it has established the Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology (IQST). This unique institute aims to transfer basic scientific findings in quantum physics into technological applications, across disciplinary boundaries from physics, materials and engineering sciences to life and information sciences.

Excellence in research and teaching combined with university-level cutting-edge medicine characterizes the Medical Faculty. Two of the main research topics are trauma research and research in the haematology and oncology. Modern and innovative teaching for students in four different medical course programmes are a major priority. In addition to classic teaching concepts, modern and innovative teaching concepts and technologies are being used.
