Institute of Chemical Engineering

Welcome at the Institute of Chemical Engineering!

Chemical Engineering is a rather young discipline at Ulm University. The institute was found in 2015 and the first professor, Prof. Güttel, was recruited in the same year. A second and third professor (Prof. Grützner and Prof. Ziegenbalg) followed in 2017 and 2018. Since then, the study program has been continuously developed and enhanced and research groups were established.

What is chemical engineering?

In very general terms, chemical engineering deals with the conversion of substances and their properties and can therefore be regarded as material conversion engineering. It represents an interdisciplinary field with elements of chemistry and mechanical engineering. The field of chemical engineering, which is closely related to process engineering, imparts important competences for meeting the challenges of the energy and raw material turnaround. One task of process engineering is the implementation of fundamentally new chemical findings on a technical scale, as the example of the Haber-Bosch process shows.
